The Trecena of Respect
Dignity, strength, humility and power. Respect, honor and integrity. These are the values Manik’, the Deer, embodies. Free of the toxic effects of ego, Manik’ stands head and shoulders above the skirmishes of mankind, the epitome of grace in the face of danger and uncertainty that’s all around him.
Profoundly spiritual and peaceful, Manik’ seeks to impart no violence or harm to others, but does have the raw power to defend himself and others when the need arises. He is no gentle or weak spirit—he crushes the stereotype that states spiritual beings are soft and passive. Indeed, the deepest spiritual thinkers and most balanced individuals carry the greatest personal strength. And what is strength but the direct result of ultimate self-respect?
This trecena, your challenge is to find your strength. This doesn’t mean ramping up your time at the gym or signing up for aikido. It means developing a stable sense of self-respect, without the arrogance, judgment, and ego that often hang on to our psyches, latching on like so many psychic parasites.
Respect without reservation, respect without judgment or self-importance. Respect who you are and what you do for no reason other than because you are here. Respect your inherent talents and skills, respect the role you play in your family and society and the legacy you will leave to future generations. Respect yourself, and live that respect through every pore of your being. It will then naturally flow outward to those around you.
You will find that true respect, for both yourself and others, does indeed build strength—the kind that will carry you through storm and upheaval, and enable you to stand on your own feet regardless of the challenge.

Tzolkin Trecena Notes – 1 Deer (Manik)
Day 27 of the 260 Day Tzolkin
Gregorian Date: March 9 , 2011
Year Bearer: 12 Road (Eb)
Trecenas are thirteen-day periods in the Tzolkin. Each Trecena starts with the Number 1, but with
a different Day Glyph. As a wave of the Thirteen Heavens, the underlying energy is governed by
the First Day Glyph of the Trecena and influences all thirteen successive Day Glyphs. Being aware
of the predominant energy of the First Day of the Trecena, we can align our intentions with that
energy and allow our goals to manifest.
This Trecena starts with 1 Manik (Deer/Healing Hand) - instinctual, intuitive, ritual dance, stabilizes
the four directions, purifies spirit to rise above limitations.
Deer energy represents the aspect of spiritual leadership, a day that opens a portal for all to express
the holiness and sanctity of life. Many shamanic rituals were performed on Deer Days giving thanks
to the Ancestors. Shamans themselves were initiated on the most sacred day of all, 8 Deer. The Deer
Dance Festival was an ancient ritual dance performed annually. It is still performed today by many
native cultures and symbolizes equality and balance between man and nature, hunter and hunted,
the sacred rhythm of the cosmic dance.
Deer energy is the silence of all that has gone before and all that will happen in the future reflected
in the eyes of the deer. The glyph itself shows a healing hand. One interpretation is that the hand
is holding the spark of life, the thread that connects our past and future with our present moment.
The energy of the Deer uplifts our spirit to rise above our worldly limitations. This can be an
empowering time to speak freely about strongly held beliefs for the good of the community, family
and/or self. This is especially important at this time because of the shift which Earth is presently
experiencing. No longer can things remain the same with the same paradigms controlling events.
Now is the time for change and now is the time for that change to be oriented toward the good
of humanity (not corporations). Let’s look to our ancestors for the knowledge and wisdom needed
in the present moment to visualize and dream a new future. This is especially pertinent now because
of the situation in the Gulf of Mexico . Individually, we can pray for and envision an end to the
toxic flow. This universal deer/healing energy can be directed by our heart to heal the collective
wound and bring back the abundant fish and wildlife.
Another representation of the Trecena is that of a creative wave beginning at 1 and ending at 13,
with the numbers 6, 7 and 8 representing the crest of the wave. The crest could be interpreted as
a strong influential energy, although the underlying influence on the Trecena would still rest in the
beginning. Deer energy underlies (or influences) the days of 6 Eb, the ladder or pyramid of the Road
of Life; 7 Ben, the pillar or World Tree, source of all inner power; and 8 Ix, the Jaguar, Lord of
Darkness, who rules the Underworld or our shadow selves, and also the Lord of four-legged animals.
The sacred protection and groundedness of Deer energy provides an opportunity to travel our
spiritual path of inner exploration without fear. We are then free to express our heart-felt beliefs
for the good of humanity.
As we journey through each day of this Trecena:
1 Deer (Manik) | March 9, 2011 |
2 Star (Lamat) | March 10 |
3 Offering (Muluc) | March 11 |
4 Dog (Oc) | March 12 |
5 Monkey (Chuen) | March 13 |
6 Road (Eb) | March 14 |
7 Reed (Ben) | March 15 |
8 Jaguar (Ix) | March 16 |
9 Eagle (Men) | March 17 |
10 Wisdom (Cib) | March 18 |
11 Earth (Caban) | March 19 |
12 Flint (Etznab) | March 20 |
13 Storm (Cauac) | March 21 |
| |
Utilize the sacred energy of Deer to connect with your spirituality. This is a great time to perform
ceremony, ritual and dance giving thanks to the Ancestors for the gift of life and for the opportunity
to live a new future on earth through expressions of love and peace.

Manik - West
Symbolism:
The Mayan name for this day,
Manik (mah-NEEK), does not translate easily and is, unfortunately, not useful as a clue to the symbolism of this day-sign. The glyph itself, which appears to be a hand in grasping position, is not suggestive of anything in particular either.
Personality:
The Manik type is peaceful, generous, cooperative, artistic and inspiring. While they are generally placid people, they can also be very bold in speaking up for what they feel to be right.
They can be mentally powerful and, as one would expect, are not easily convinced or swayed from their intellectual positions. Manik people need companionship.
For these natives, community and family are of great importance, but so is their freedom to follow their nomadic instincts. Manik is a sign of participation in the community. Those born under it are often deeply involved with family traditions, and in some cases, socio-political traditions.
Family or community based completely on these elements. Manik types are also very sensual, artistic, and even eccentric. Their aesthetic sense is usually highly developed, and they often dabble in one or other of the arts. Those born on this day-sign are very sensual and sexually inclined, yet are also quite intuitive and very sensitive to the needs and conerns of other beings.
Challenge:
To be free, independent and secure in relationships.
Solution:
To accept and be comfortable with their own individuality, no matter what strange characteristics it may entail. Manik
1-Manik
Beneath the 1-Manik surface personality is a person who struggles with issues of freedom versus security. Manik people display an urge to take off for parts unknown, but they also demonstrate a desire for the security of home and family. Because the struggle with this conflict leads people to discover unique solutions, they often become innovators or creators of a somewhat unconventional personal lifestyle. Frequently they have unusual interests of an investigative or searching nature.
G-4 (North)
Some people born under the influence of this Lord are teachers, some are healers, and some are over protective parents. Most seem to have a nervous disposition and a need to talk.
They are intense guardians of one thing or another; other people, children, pets. Youth of often a fixation for them; they are drawn to children and perhaps even work with them in some capacity.
Their nurturing instincts are quite strong, and they need to find healthy outlets to express this urge. Their darker side lies in understanding that their nurturing influence can become a detriment in many ways. The communication skills of G-4 types make them excellent teachers. They can be very creative with their thinking, a quality that lends itself to art and writing. On the darker side, they think or talk incessantly and often struggle with ways to turn off their minds. By working as a teacher or communicator, they may be able to turn this tendency into positive activity.
G-4 types have a tendency to scatter their energies and this inclination may lead to being a "jack of all trades but master of none." Mercury is usually strong in the charts of those who are born under this lord, as is an emphasized twelfth house.

-----------------------------------------------------
The Number 1 symbolizes beginnings, unity, the original energy of creation. Even though it is a low number, it is powerful, for it has to do with the energy of the new
trecena which is making its arrival. Daykeepers usually do ritual on a 1 day, and in some traditional communities there is a special shrine dedicated to the number 1. It also symbolizes the power of thought, the initial or beginning “idea” behind all things that inspires us to create and to bring things into manifestation.
MANIK (KEJ) THE PILLARS OF THE UNIVERSE: Signifies the deer, and is the
nawal of all kinds of four-footed animals. It is also the
nawal of the Mayan religion and of the rainforest. This is the day of the
aj q’ijab or Mayan priests; it is power, authority, hierarchy, force, the four cardinal points. This is the
nawal of the four corners of the earth, and is sometimes said to have an association with the planet Saturn. Upon this day, we pray for harmony among one and all. This extends to the natural world around us as well as to other human beings; one gains great power and energy if one is able to spend this day in nature or in the wilderness.

-----------------------------------------------------
Tzolkin: 1 Kej Long Count: 12.19.18.3.7Kej symbolizes the day of man as the authority and guidance of the principal people. It is the strength and power the fate of humanity contains. Kej represents the four corners, the four pillars and the four cardinal points that were created from the beginning to sustain the force and energy of Earth, the moon and the stars. Constitutes the bearer of the Years, the bearer of Time. Kej is a day for delivery of service as mother and father, a day of the value of the rod of authority.
